FIRST GOALS 2025-2026
The Valley Youth Hockey Association (VYHA) Recreational Hockey Program, also known as “First Goals,” is entering its eleventh season and once again offering players in the Syracuse area a low-cost, no-travel, low-commitment hockey alternative.
First Goals emphasizes learning basic hockey skills and sportsmanship in a no-check, low-pressure environment that fosters a love of the game. Players with little or no hockey experience are especially welcome!
This in-house recreational program is open to boys and girls ages 9–12 (with flexibility for slightly younger or older players) who are not currently on an organized hockey team. The focus is on fun, confidence-building, and foundational skill development.
Since its start in 2015, First Goals has been a launching point for many players who have gone on to join house leagues, travel teams, high school teams, and even college club hockey—or to become referees. Many parents of participants have also become involved with VYHA as assistant coaches, head coaches, committee members, or board members.
First Goals is ideal for kids who want to try hockey for the first time, as well as those who simply want to stay connected to the sport. Its flexible structure allows players to enjoy other sports or activities during the winter, while still playing hockey with friends. The program’s mission is to maximize each player’s experience while keeping costs and travel to a minimum.

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2025–2026 SEASON IS OPEN
Before registering, please review our eligibility information.
2025–26 Season Dates:
• October: 15, 22, 29 (Exact start date TBD – pending on ice availability)
Ice Time: Wednesdays @ 5:30 PM. Each session includes a skill clinic followed by pond-hockey-style play with on-ice coaching (please arrive early to get suited up).
Location: Meachem Ice Rink.
Equipment: Full equipment required. VYHA may have limited loaner gear, but participants should plan to bring their own, including sticks. Skates may be rented at the rink if needed.
Extras: Optional VYHA skating clinics (age/skill appropriate) are also available at no extra cost to participants.
Fees: $100 for full season; $50 prorated for half-season after Jan 1. All players must also be registered with USA Hockey.
Goal: To have fun and enjoy the great game of hockey!
